Opened Eyes and Burning Hearts

After His resurrection, Jesus deliberately leads the faith of the disciples to rest in an understanding of and belief in His written Word, the same resting place of our belief today.

1. Their visual and verbal recognition of Jesus was deliberately prevented.  v.16

The purpose in preventing them from recognizing Jesus immediately was so that they would first know and believe what the Scriptures said.

2. Jesus admonished them for being "slow of heart to believe" all that the prophets had spoken.  v. 25-26

3.  Jesus expounds the Scripture concerning Himself.  v. 27  cp. v. 44

4. The Scriptures are "opened" to them.  v. 32   cp. v. 45

Their eyes were opened to see what the Word said, and their heart burned as a result of the Holy Spirit's convincing work.
