A Jealous God

It is not a vain thought to think that the God that indwells me is a jealous God with such a love for me, that He does not want to share my affections, allegiance, and attention with someone or something else.

1. The Scripture consistently presents God as a jealous God.

Exodus 20:5; 34:14.   The root of the word "jealous" means: heat, passion, zeal.  When used of God, jealousy is His zeal or passion to protect what belongs to Him.

2. I can provoke the jealousy of God.

I provoke God's jealousy when I give someone or something the attention, affection, or allegiance that belongs to God.

Deuteronomy 29:17-20;  32:15-21;  1 Kings 14:9, 22-24;

1 Corinthians 10:20-22; James 4:4-5

3.  We are to know and consider the jealousy of God, for the Scriptures do not teach this truth in vain.

a. Provoking God to jealousy in not a good thing. God will not sit by idle, He is jealous.  God will do things to restore and protect the relationship.  Provoking God to jealousy has consequences in my life.

b. Provokiing God to jealousy will trigger the Spirit's convicting work in my life, leading to no rest, no peace, no fruit.  When I find myself in that condition, I should consider how I may be provoking the Spirit to jealousy.

c. Knowing God's jealousy has some other affects.

It shows me how much He loves me and how much He desires the relationship with me.

It should move me to have a corresponding zeal for Him and the relationship He intends for us.  Cp. Revelation 3:18-19
